Season in India especially Kerala has entered into the rainy phase
and almost half of the Southwest Monsoons are over. The initial phase of
monsoon sees a lot of disease outbreaks due to the polluted stagnant and
flowing waters, ideal germ-vector proliferation environment and lowest level
immunity in the populations. The indiscriminate and unscientific usage of the
plastics especially the packing materials has turned into a big menace which
acts as drain chokers and scaffolds for germ breeding. The declaration of 2018
World Environment Day theme is a proof to the menace.
Ayurveda always has stressed the point that when the land, season
and water get polluted epidemic diseases happen. The science also states that
strict observance of the daily routine and seasonal regimen is the key to
keeping oneself healthy during the hostile season. A healthy Ayurveda lifestyle
with Dinacharya and Ritucharya bestows good health and robust immunity. The latter
half of the monsoon which is the month of Karkitakam is famous for the Kerala
Ayurveda Special Karkitaka Chikitsa or Varsha Charya or Monsoon Regimen which
focuses on detoxifying the mind and body of the accumulations and diseases of
the past months and rejuvenating the mind and body by helping to regain
strength and boost immunity to stay healthy throughout the year ahead.
The beginning of the first day of Karkitakam coincides with Karkataka
Sankranthi when the sun passes through the Tropic of Cancer. The month happens
between the 17th of July to the 16th of Augustis known as
the healing month. Karkidaka Chikitsa is the sum total of the therapies,
medicines, diets such as Karkitaka Kanji (medicinal porridge), rituals and
other Ayurveda lifestyle modification modules for a healthy life and prolonged
well-being.
Internal usage, external usage, as an auspicious offer and as a hair
décor is the various forms in which the monsoon bouquet of herbs Dashapushpam
is employed in Kerala society. The collection of the 10 herbs which are
individually and collectively potent of cleansing the system of all type of
toxins is a gift of Kerala Ayurveda to the world. Dashapushpams are an integral
part of Karkitaka Chikitsa.
